What to do in Nicaragua?

There are abundant things to do while vacationing in Nicaragua. Depending where you are and what you like to do, you will likely get yourself well occupied during your travel.

Renowned for its great surfing beaches, Nicaragua owns a special place in the hearts of the surfers. With different types of waves at different beaches, it makes things much easier for novice to pro surfers to try the challenge. Then a few thousands of kilometers above the sea, volcanoes like San Cristóbal or Cosigüina are waiting to be explored. It may be a tiring way to the top, but definitely a rewarding one overall.
If neither surfing nor hiking is your thing, there are still many other cool things to do. At the quiet Pacific beaches, you can just stroll around, ride a horse during sunset, swim, kayak or simply sunbathe.

If you enjoy observing the wonders of animals and plantation species, take a boat trip to San Juan River and visit the so many nature reserves you find on the way and have your National Geographic Live before your very eyes.

Going east will take you to the tropical dream of typical Caribbean areas. Secluded, tranquil, laid back and warm are loud characteristics that you will get upon arriving in the east. If you like a bit of sport, you can rent a bicycle and ride it around small islands like the Corn Islands. Or get a mask and a fin and jump into the ocean to observe the ever stunning marine habitat through the crystal clear sea.

Interested in learning about cultures? Colonial cities like Granada and León are perfect sites to start. With such a rich history, colourful houses and grand churches and cathedrals, one can learn a lot in these cities.

Nicaragua Volcanoes

A visit to Nicaragua, the Land of Lake of Volcanoes, would not be complete without exploring one of the most incredible, impressive volcano chains in Central America. Not only will one be astonished by the wonderful living things they encounter on the way to the top, but their hard effort will also be highly rewarded with the most breathtaking views of the wonderful landscape, skyscape and even waterscape from up there.

A hiking journey to Nicaraguan volcanoes means a fun learning period of the biological diversities in the forests that cover the mountains and an appreciation time for the nature wonders of magnificent craters, crater lakes, calderas and neighboring volcanoes and green fertile plantations.

With the so many different volcanoes to choose from -active, extinct, smoking, or dormant- the volcanoes in Nicaragua are among the most important tourism features in the country. The overview of the nine most popular volcanoes in Nicaragua will be discussed separately on this website.

Cosigüina - San Cristóbal - Telica - Cerro Negro - Momotombo - Masaya - Mombacho - Concepción - Maderas

Nicaragua Surf

Still young at surf tourism compared to its neighboring countries Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador and Mexico, Nicaragua offers exactly the right places to surf with great swells and less people. Taking advantage from being pinched by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Nicaragua has some amazing surf spots that serve surfers of all levels. What makes these places unique is the consistent offshore wind coming from Lake Cocibolca, the great fresh water lake that extends as vast as 8,264 kilometers square. The gigantic area of the lake makes it possible that winds blow constantly towards the Pacific Ocean. The consistency of the swells remains steady, which makes it possible for surfers to surf all day long and almost all year long, at least in the south Pacific part of the country.

Although the surf sites are surfable all year long, pro surfers may want to check out when the best swells come. March to October is said to be the best time to surf as this is the time when the most south swells hit Nicaragua's Pacific coast. It is when the swell gets consistently head high to overhead.

Beach breaks are the type of breaks most of Nicaragua's surf spots feature; though there are several point breaks. For more information, please visit our four Nicaragua surf sections: Northern spots, Central spots, Popoyo spots and San Juan del Sur spots.

There are more surf spots than the ones mentioned in these pages, but in respect of the locals, we will only mention the most popular ones.

Happy surfing at our quiet, far-from-crowded beaches and enjoy our excellent constant swells.
